Technology & Culture: Improving the Academic Performance of African-American and Hispanic Students

This is a proposal for a concurrent session, co-authored with Elizabeth White, where the participants get to explore and create.  The integration of technology in K-12 classrooms is happening without consideration of the role of Ethno-Culture. In this session, attendees will learn how culture influences technology use and how to create transformative multimedia activities that incorporate mobile technology and social media applications that are preferred by low-performing minority students into the classroom.

This is a roundtable session proposal that was submitted and accepted by the Culture, Learning, and Technology Division. The proposal focuses on identifying barriers that prevent teachers from integrating technology effectively in schools that qualify for Title I status. This proposal was driven by the question: What are teachers' perceptions of their own skill in technology integration, handling difficult behaviors, and motivating students to engage in more student-centered work?

This proposal was prepared in EDIT 8190 to introduce and explain the need for my innovation project, “The Teacher’s Manual.”  The idea was that K-12 teachers would have access to an online database of web 2.0 tools that correspond to Blooms’ Taxonomy with ready-made activities available with a simple point and click.

This paper, written for EDIT 9990 Foundations, argues that diversity of culture has been left out of the technology integration conversation and makes an argument for its introduction through teacher professional development.
